Extend your horror thriller marathon beyond Halloween: Watching a horror movie might help you torch an equivalent of a chocolate bar!

A recent study by University of Westminister found that films with regular ‘jump-scare’ moments can jog up the heart rate, trigger an adrenaline rush and raise your metabolism to burn up an average of 113 calories – similar to what you’ll exorcise with a half-hour walk.

The top 5 fat-busters to keep your eyes on are: The Shining (184 cal), Jaws (161 cal), The Exorcist (158 cal), Alien (152 cal), and Saw (133 cal).

Need something to munch on during the show? Snacking responsibly keeps you feeling satisfied, reduces your risk of binge eating and increases the chances of your diet’s success. So screw the guilt and reach out for these top 5 yummy and healthy noshers that are under 100 calories each:

Almonds: Snack up to 14 almonds (a total of 98 calories). Almonds are a rich source of dietary fiber, Vitamin B and cholesterol-lowering phytosterols.

Yoplait Light Strawberry Yoghurt: Yoghurt is a great way to load up on probiotics, which will help bowel movements, and are thought to aid body functions. Each serving of Yoplait Light Strawberry Yoghurt is 90 calories, and is high in Vitamin A as well.

Corn on the Cob: If you are a fan of corn like us, you are in luck – a medium sized corn on cob costs you only 60 calories, but is a good source of fiber, thiamin and Vitamin B6 too. Beware the buttery topping and salt though.

Glass of Red Wine: Our personal favourite, and probably a surprise to you. One serving of wine will add 85 calories to your daily intake. Considering that downing a can of Coca-Cola will set you back by 140 calories, we say go for the wine. It will not only help you unwind, but help reduce heart disease when taken in moderation as well.

Hershey’s Kisses: Who says you cannot have chocolate when on a diet? Dark chocolate not only make you feel happier with its serotonin-inducing properties, it has also been shown to improve the chances of a diet program! Just make sure you do not go overboard. Stick to just 4 (90 calories). Lock the rest away for now.

You don’t have to leave the house to go from ‘Flab’ to ‘Fab’ – just lose the ‘L’ (aka ‘Laziness’) and you can tame your fat and tune up your fitness while enjoying your favourite TV shows.

Commercial Break Rope Jump: Instead of jumping between TV channels, let that two-minute commercial break be your cue to pick up the jumping rope and kickstart your fat-burning engine. Repeat four times.

Couch Queen Sexy Leg Lift: Tone your tummy and thighs to Herve Leger-worthy status. Lie on the floor facing the TV, with both hands under your head and your lower back pressed down against the floor. Raise both legs into the air. Engage your abs and lower your left leg down slowly until it almost touches the floor, before slowly bringing it back up to meet your right leg again. Repeat with your right leg. After 10 reps with each leg, try doing both legs at once (you’ll feel your jelly belly tightening up!).

Couch Skinny Side Crunches: To work on those love handles, lie on the couch (or floor, if your couch isn’t firm enough) on your side, knees flexed. Place your opposite hand behind the head and point the elbow towards the ceiling – check that your shoulder should be in line with your hip. Contract your side muscles and lift your body off the couch, attempting to bring your rib cage towards the hip. Exhale as you crunch your sides and inhale as you relax. Do 10 reps and switch sides.

Couch Booty-licious Squats: Stand in front of your couch, squat until your butt is just above the seat cushions, and hold that position for one minute. Repeat four times to get your rear into body-skimming gear.

Couch Potato Yummy Arm Dips: Prep your triceps for spaghetti straps. Sit on the edge of your couch and rest your hands on the edge so your fingertips are pointing away from you. Walk your feet out to move your butt hanging in front of the couch with your legs bent and feet placed about hip width apart on the floor. Slowly bend your elbows backward to lower your hips towards the floor and then slowly straighten your arms. Do 10 reps.
